Grooming Your Bichon Frise
Grooming your Bichon Frise is a time consuming, yet very rewarding undertaking. Once the hair on this beautiful breed is bathed, fluffed, combed out and clipped, the results are worth every bit of effort. To properly groom a Bichon Frise, you will need a few simple grooming tools at your disposal.
First and foremost, you should have either a folding table made for grooming or a solid waist-high place on which to work. Other items needed : a comb, a brush, professional clippers, ear powder, shampoo, nail clippers, and grooming scissors.
When grooming a Bichon Frise, be sure to comb/brush out your Bichon before you wet him/her. Make sure that you have gently taken all of the tangles out of his coat. Once your Bichon is wet, those tangles will be very difficult to loosen!
Next, is the bath. Wet your dog down with warm water starting at the head and continuing down the body. Then, using some type of tearless shampoo, start the bath with the head. Soap up your dog paying special attention to the ears and eyes, which are the areas that will need the most attention on the head. Some people choose to use whitening shampoo... but this is usually reserved for people who show their Bichons.
Next, rinse your Bichon Frise well, ensuring that all of the shampoo has been removed. Then, using the cotton balls, clean out the ears with alcohol. If your Bichon Frise allows you to do so, the ear hair should be plucked first. (Ask your veterinarian about this process.)
Drying your Bichon, if done properly, is the key to success when grooming this breed. Using a hand held dryer, carefully dry your dog's hair, using the brush to straighten at the same time. This is usually a two person process when done at home. The goal is to achieve a fluffy, cotton like appearance. Be sure not to hold the dryer too close to your Bichon's skin. You have to be very careful not to burn your little buddy.
Now that your Bichon Frise is dry, it is time to trim the hair. Using the shaving clippers, and being very careful, it is time to shave your Bichon. And, don't forget to clip his/her nails. Be sure not to clip the nails too close to the wick. They will bleed, and hurt your little Bichon. It is best if you consult with your veterinarian about the proper way to clip his nails, and even his coat.
In order to get the "Button like" appearance around the eyes, comb the hair forward, and holding the head be the chin, carefully trim off the hair covering the eyes, and at the corners of the eyes. The head should have a rounded appearance, as well as the legs. For more precise grooming, a professional groomer should be employed.
