What to Look for When Boarding Your Bichon Frise
Anytime it comes to boarding your precious pet while you are going to be heading off for a weekend or a vacation, it is very important to look into a great kennel. After all, boarding your pet is almost like looking for the perfect home away from home for your four-legged friend. In order to find a terrific kennel for your Bichon Frise, it is imperative that you make sure that you do your research and ask all of the appropriate questions. This way, while you are gone, you will have the piece of mind that your precious pet will be very well taken care of.
If you have never had to board your Bichon before, it is a terrific idea to ask around to see if any of your friends or even your veterinarian have a couple of suggestions for kennels. The chances are pretty good that they will be able to give you some insight on great places to board your dog, especially if they have used the kennel before. After you have been given recommendations, you can either make it a point to call the kennel up to ask some questions about their facilities or simply make plans for a visit. Often times, a random visit is the best way to see their facilities to see just how they keep their facilities. If you show up unannounced for a spot check and they decline showing you the facilities, you may feel uneasy about leaving your pet there.
When you make your visit to the kennel, it is very important that you ask all of the questions that you might have. Do not be afraid to try and find out absolutely everything that you can about the personnel that they have on staff. You might want to make sure that you have been introduced to all of the people who will come into contact with your Bichon Frise during their stay at the kennel. This will help you to make an informed decision, being absolutely certain that the staff is friendly and well-suited for proper dog care.
Next up, you are going to want to find out what their normal daily routines are for feeding, exercise and so on. Since some kennels will actually charge extra for extended play time for your dog, you might want to inquire about play and exercise schedules. It is also very important to find out what their policies are on caring for pets in the unfortunate event that your Bichon Frise will have an emergency while they are in their care at the kennel.
Finally, a terrific idea is to set up a short stay for your Bichon to make sure that he or she is going to do well for an extended period at the kennel of your choice. Make sure that you pay close attention to your dog after you pick him/her up, as this will tell you whether or not they had a good experience at the kennel. If your dog is unusually dirty, hungry or thirsty, this might be a sign that he/she was overlooked at the kennel while you were away.
Make sure that your drop off and pick-up times coincide with the kennel's times. Some kennels are not open on Sunday, which means that you have to extend your Bichon's time at the kennel an extra day, making Saturday or Monday the drop-off or pick-up day. Also, some kennels are only open during limited daily hours, since the personnel who does the office work (for dogs being dropped off or picked up) is also the personnel who take care of the dogs.
Some pet owners only feel comfortable leaving their pets in kennel facilities that offer "runs" so that their pet can walk around, and go in and out of his/her private kennel whenever he/she wants. Other pet owners are comfortable leaving their pet in a smaller pen, making sure that their pet has several times a day when he/she is taken outside. It is important to take a look at the pens and/or runs to make sure that the Bichon's owner can decide what will make the pet feel more comfortable. Be wary of a kennel that does not allow you to look at the facilities...
